Bespoke or Made to Measure - What's the Difference?

Bespoke or Made to Measure - What's the Difference?

Bespoke is a term that is these days generously applied to products that are customised to the individual and his tastes Whilst we share this celebration of individuality, Budd still remain traditionalists when it comes to bespoke and uses the term within the paradigms that still reign strong amongst the authentic tailoring houses of  Savile Row and Jermyn Street.

To us, bespoke is about the personal, face to face relationship between the cutter and the customer, cutting to a unique body shape and list of requirements. This process can not be carried out online. For those seeking such a convenience, we offer our made to measure service. It is an excellent and simple way of having your shirts personally tailored and cut, offering ample choice, beautiful craftsmanship and convenience. Create the shirt you most desire - whether for a special occasion, day-to-day wear or just the pleasure of trying something different.

Made to Measure

A personal appointment with an experienced cutter is the first step.
For new orders, the cutter needs to meet with the customer in person so as to take a full set of measurements and make an appraisal of any configurations, such as sloping shoulders, a a pronounced stomach, prominent blades etc.

Orders can be placed in store or online. Customers may choose their preferred fit and submit their measurements for neck size, body size and sleeve length using our online guide or the assistance of one of our sales associates in store.
Blank canvas - the cutter will work with the customer to create exactly the shirt that they desire, adhering to specified styling details, whether these be a raglan sleeve, covered placket etc. The styling options on bespoke are unlimited (within reason!).  Customers may choose from three different fits. Classic, Tailored and Slim. Collar shape is selected from nine available options, cuffs are selected from a range of six.
A personal consultation and selection of cloth options. Budd carries thousands of cloth samples in store. A minimum order of four shirts is required  Cloth selection may be made in store, or with an ample but more restricted selection of over 150- cloths online.
Your cutter hand drafts your pattern on to paper incorporating his observations on build and stance into his workings. He will also cut individual patterns for collar and cuff as well as the body. Your cutter will work 15-20 measurements into this pattern. Each shirt is cut in the workroom above our Piccadilly Arcade shop. The shirt body, collar and cuffs are cut by hand from established block patterns at our Andover workshop by an experienced and dedicated made to measure cutter.
A first sample shirt is individually cut by hand and sent to our workshop in Hampshire where it is sewn together by one of our seamstresses. She will adhere to detailed notes and instructions from the cutter.  The shirt is sewn together by our team of seamstresses. The same details such as mother of pearl buttons, hand turned collars, cuffs and split yokes are applied to our MTM shirts in the same way as they are to our bespoke offering. We do not compromise on quality of craft or detail.
The customer is sent the shirt to try, wash and wear, before returning for a fitting with the cutter. At this point, the fit and comfort of the shirt is reviewed.  The customer is sent his finished shirt, or may come by the shop to collect it.
Any amendments are made to the pattern and the remainder shirts are cut. Any necessary alterations are made to the original sample shirt. There is no minimum order on Budd's made to measure shirt service.
